A veteran politician, Raju was born in Moida village of Vizianagaram
district. He entered politics in 1959. For eight years, he was president
of the NellimarlaPanchayatSamiti. From 1962 to 1966, he was a member of
the State Central Library and the vice president of the State Library
Authority. A veteran trade unionist, he was the president of the trade
unions of Nellimarla mills, Arun Mills and Sarvaraya Jutes and
Textiles. In 1967, he had contested from Gajapathinagaram constituency
as an independent and notched up an impressive win. He had won a second
time from the same constituency later and then represented Sathivada in
1978, 1983, 1985 and 1989. He was the director of RTC board from 1974 to
1977. He was minister for transport, sugar and civil supplies.
Post-YSR’s demise, Raju backed YS Jagan and became the Vizianagaram
district convener of the party since May 2011.
